Asian countries like China, India, Japan or Indonesia have always prized high quality seafood much more than the US and are willing to pay top dollar compared to the average American. This is indicative of the fact that 91% of what Americans consume come from overseas, whereas one-third caught in the US - like Alaskan salmon - are exported to the highest bidders abroad. But what looms large is the fact that today's level of fishing is simply unsustainable, and more than 70% of the fisheries around the world are overfished. Data elsewhere also shows that overfishing has impacted the primary production of those ecosystems, thus creating a less hospitable environment for future generations of fish to flourish and thrive.
